He was the son of sage Vishrava and a brother of Ravana

EXPLANATION:

Ahiravana, was the son of sage Vishrava and the brother of Ravana, He was a rakshasa who took secretly to the Netherworld Rama and his brother Lakshmana, consulting with his friends and deciding to sacrifice the lives of the two holy Brothers in the altar of his chosen goddess, the Goddess of Mahamaya. Nevertheless, the assassination of Ahiravana and his army by Hanuman saved the brothers lives.

Ravana asks for help in the Ramayana, in the war between Rama and Ravana, when Indrajit, Ravana, the son of Ravana, is killed. The king of Patala (Underworld), Mahiravana, promises help. St Agastya comes to tell everyone in the army of Rama about an incident that could take place during the night with Rama and Lakshmana.

Hanuman was put under watch and told that no one was allowed to go to Rama and Lakshmana. Ahiravana tries everything to get into the room but Hanuman thugs them all. Mahiravana eventually takes the shape of Vibhishana, and Hanuman grants him entry. Ahiravana enters fast and removes "Rama and Lakshmana sleeping." When Hanuman realises what had happened, he went to Vibhishana who said that Rama and Lakshmana had been abducted by Ahiravana.

If Hanuman does not rescue them quickly, Mahiravana will sacrifice both Rama and Lakshmana to Chandi. Hanuman goes to Patala, the door to which is defended by a creature, who is half reptile and half Vanara. Hanuman is asked who he is. Hanuman is puzzled because he didn't have a child and he is an expert brahmachari, he says: "He's Makardhwaja, your son! A drop of sweat falls to the ocean and into the mouth of a strong crocodile as you sailed onto the ocean, which is the source of my birth," the creature says.

Hanuman reaches Patala and meets Ahiravana after his son has been defeated. Chandrasena tells Hanuman that the only way to conquer him is to expose five different candles in five different directions, all in return for a promise that he will become a consort of Lord Rama. Hanuman takes his five-headed shape (Panchamuki Hanuman) and blows out five candles quickly so that Ahiravana is destroyed. During the saga, the spirits are both unconscious in Rama and Lakshmana.
