Mr. Iron, a good Latin scholar, was a neighbor of Mr. William Wade whom Helen and Miss Sullivan had been visiting in Hutton, Pennsylvania. He often helped her in arithmetic, which she found as troublesome as it was uninteresting. He also read Tennyson’s ‘In Memoriam.’ Mr. Irons taught Helen how to know an author and recognize his style.
