Neeraj Chopra bagged India's only gold of the Tokyo Games

One of India's greatest Olympians, Anju Bobby George was in awe of Neeraj Chopra after the Olympic gold medalist out-performed other javelin throwers by quite a distance to notch up the first track-and-field Games medal for the country. Anju hailed Neeraj as a real-world champion, saying we can't ask anything else from him as getting a medal in the Summer Games is the toughest thing.

Neeraj recorded a throw of 87.57 m on Saturday at the Tokyo Olympics and secured a historic gold medal for India in athletics. Thanks to Neeraj Chopra’s historic win, the Indian national anthem will be played at the medal ceremony for the first time since Beijing Olympics that took place in 2008.

Anju also said that this is a great day in the history of Indian athletics and Neeraj's medal will act as a boost for Indian athletes. Neeraj became only the 2nd Indian individual Olympic gold medalist and the first in track and field in the country's history at the Games.

"In athletes, we can’t expect that from athletes. But he is already a junior world champion and Asian Games gold medalist. Today he has proved he is a real-world champion. He is an Olympic champion today at the age of 23. Beyond that, we can’t ask anything from him," Anju Bobby George told India Today.

"Today, he produced his best and was dominating completely today from the first throw and never took a step back. So it was an amazing competition. And a great day for Indian athletics.
