Who is the head of the panchayat samiti. how is he appointed ?

The Panchayat Samiti is headed by the Sarpanch....

 He is elected directly in some states

 and

indirectly in some by the members of the Gram Sabha.....

or, To make it more clear,

Chairperson or head of panchayat samiti -

elected from among its own member.
