The spark that led to a mutiny in several sepoy companies was the issue of new gunpowder cartridges for the Enfield rifle in February, 1857. A rumour was spread that the cartridges were made from cow and pig fat.

The issue of greased cartridges introduced by The British in 1857 was the immediate cause of the revolt. It was believed that the cartridges were covered with pig and cow's fat. Eating cow was taboo for Hindus and Muslims regarded pig as an impure animal.
