Who are your favorite psychologists?

I have so many, but I'll list 4 who had a significant influence on my development as a psychologist and therapist.

1. Sandra Bem

When I first discovered Dr. Bem's work on androgyny and gender roles in the 1980s, it was like someone had opened a window and finally let fresh air in. For the first time, I had a contemporary role model for how to be a successful professional psychologist who could also be a partner in an egalitarian relationship, and her research showed that the combination of feminine and masculine traits (androgyny) was a sign of psychological health for both men and women. Through her work and her life, she showed that it was possible to be a strong, powerful, confident, and caring, empathic, feminine person...that it was not only possible, it was ideal. Her work gave me the boost I needed as a young woman to see the possible future me.
