A musical instrument called pungi was banned by Emperor Aurangzeb for its shrill unpleasant sound. It was perfected by a barber who belonged to a family of professional musicians. It was played by the barber.

  • Aurangzeb had banned the instrument pungi, as it was thought to be a noise maker.
  • The barber decided to improve the tone of pungi and selected a pipe to do the same.
  • As he played it, some of these holes closed and opened, giving gentle and melodious sounds and  impressed the royalty of emperor Aurangzeb.
  • Everyone was impressed, and they decided to give the new name to the instrument as Shehnai
