Chromosome theory of inheritance was proposed by Sutton and Boveri independently in 1902.

Similarities in the behaviour of chromosomes and genes

1) Chromosomes as well as Mendelian factors (whether dominant or recessive) are transmitted from generation to generation in an unaltered form.

2) Each chromosomes replicate during S-phase. So they have two sister chromatids. The two chromatids separate and pass in to two daughter nuclei and cells during mitosis. Similarly, each allelic pair replicates, with one pair passing in to each daughter cell during mitosis. This maintains the similar genetic composition of all the cells of a multicellular organism
