Carlos and Smith protested against racial discrimination and black poverty in the USA in the prize distribution ceremony at the Mexico Olympics in 1968 by raising clenched fists and wearing black socks and no shoes. Norman, who won the silver medal at the same event expressed solidarity to this cause by wearing a human rights badge. While Tommie Smith and John Carlos were black, American athletes who won gold and bronze medals, Peter Norman was a white Australian athlete. Although they were from very different backgrounds, the issue of racial discrimination and black poverty had all their support. In fact all the three of them were punished by the Olympic authorities for raising an internal issue at an international forum and their medals were taken back. But they remain united by this cause and the two American athletes were the pallbearers at Norman's funeral in 2006. A just cause unites people from diverse backgrounds.
