Gaidinliu was born in 1915, in Manipur, in a ruling clan. She belonged to Rongmei Naga tribe. Around 1928, opposing the forced conversions of Nagas to Christianity, she joined the Heraka religious movement.

Soon, the movement took the colors of political movement with an aim to remove British from Naga areas and she led that movement. In 1932, the British government imprisoned her. Recognising her efforts, Nehru gave her the title ‘Rani’. After India got Independence, she was released from prison and was conferred ‘Padma Bhushan.’
