These are the names of the travelers and traders who came to India during the ancient and medieval period.

1) Magasthenes
2) Ptolemy
3) Fa-Hien
4) Hiuen Tsang
5) Al Beruni
6) Ibn Batuta
7) Marco Polo
8) Nicole Canti
9) Vasco da Gama

These are only a few names. Still many more names are left.

This question is incomplete because it is not clearly mentioned in the question about the traveler/trader/scholar or whatever it may be, reached first in India.

So, here is my answer. The answer is about the person who discovered the sea route from Europe to India.

Vasco da Gama was the first explorer and traveler who landed in Kozhikode (old name Calicut), Kerala on 20th May 1498. He was the first European who came to India by sea route. Vasco da Gama sailed from Lisbon, Portugal, in July 1497, rounded the Cape of Good Hope, and anchored at Malindi, on the Eastern Coast of Africa, where he met an Indian merchant who helped him in his expedition. He then set off across the Indian Ocean and reached Kozhikode on the Malabar Coast. Vasco da Gama hired an experienced Indian navigator to guide his fleet to the trade center Kozhikode.

At that time Kozhikode was the capital of an independent kingdom ruled by the Samoothiris and their ruler was Zamorin. Vasco da Gama discovered a sea route between Europe and India.
