During the Revolt 1857, many Indian princes or rulers remained loyal to the British and even actively supported them. Some of the rulers include Maharaja Naredra Singh of Patiala, Maharaja Ram Singh II of Jaipur, Maharaja Jiyaji Rao Shinde of Gwalior, Nawab Mir Farqunda Ali Khan of Hyderabad and other rulers who accepted the subsidiary alliance of Welleseley.
