Dr William Gorgas

In 1904 one man, US Chief Sanitary Officer, Dr William Gorgas, was charged with the seemingly impossible task of eradicating Yellow Fever carrying mosquitos from nearly 500 square miles of canal-zone jungle.Dr William Gorgas  sanitation department also provided about one ton of prophylactic quinine each year to people in the Canal Zone to combat malaria. Gorgas organized a major program to drain and fill swamps and wetlands around the Canal Zone. Many miles of ditches were dug, and grass and brush were cut back over wide areas.

Stopping malaria also included drainage, removal of mosquito breeding sites, and spraying (occasionally from aircrafts) of insecticides. Total elimination of transmission was slowly achieved. In 1949, the country was declared free of malaria as a significant public health problem.
