- Mahatma Jyotirao Phule started the celebration of Shiv Jayanti in the 1870s in Pune following his discovery on Shivaji's tomb. It was from then started to celebrate on a large scale. This celebration was further taken forward by Bal Gangadhar Tilak during 19s to unite people.
