let the number added to be x

 \frac{ - 16}{3}  + x =  \frac{1}{9}

transpose -16/x to Left Hand Side

x =  \frac{1}{9}  +  \frac{16}{3}  = 48

hence 48 is the number to be added

Answer:

49/9 = 5 4/9

Explanation:

Let the added number be x.

-16/3 + x = 1/9

-16 + 3x / 3 = 1/9

- 144 + 27x = 3

27x = 3 + 144

27x = 147

x = 147/27

x = 49/9 = 5 4/9
