He was an inventor (he was granted 400 patents over a 7 year period; I think he ended up with over 1000).
“Setting up a lab in Menlo Park, some of the products he developed included the telegraph, phonograph, the first commercially practical incandescent electric light bulb, alkaline storage batteries and Kinetograph (a camera for motion pictures).”
His first invention was an improved stock ticker & sold it for $40,000—a huge sum at the time. He was only 22 years old. Much of his early work was for Western Union or its competitors (telegraph companies). In 1877, he developed the phonograph, a device for recording sounds. Edison is probably mostly remembered for perfecting a commercially practical incandescent light bulb. He didn’t invent the lightbulb, he made it stay lit longer and more affordable.
Edison also created the Edison Illuminating Company, an electric utility owned by investors. It later became the General Electric Corporation (or GE). He also developed a generating station that provided electricity to parts of Lower Manhattan.
