Who was Ashoka ? What were those things who changed his attitude from a cruel person to a kind human being?

Aahoka was son of Bindusar who belonged to mauryan dynasty.Ashoka ruled alomost all the indian sub-continent.The battle of kalinga changed him from cruel to a kind human being.It was because in the battle of kalinga there was a massacre of the innocent people.
