Ashoka was a ruler of Mauryan Empire, who was the Grandson of Chandragupta Maurya and son of King Bindusara. Ashoka ruled from 268 to 232 B.C. He expanded the reign of Chandragupta Maurya all over the Indian Subcontinent except the present day Tamil Nadu, Karnatka and Kerala.

Patliputra was the capital of the reign.

Ashoka respected all the religions equally and emphasised the virtues of Ahimsa, rational faith and equal respect for each religion.

Ashoka also encouraged Buddhism and built a number of Stupas, Sangharam, Vihars, Chaitya and several residancies for Buddhist monks all over South Asia and Central Asia.

Ashoka is referred to as Ashoka the Great due to the effect he had on world and his military conquests.

He led many wars and won and conquered most of the Indian subcontinent but the last war of his life when he conquered Kalinga made him realise the importance of life. After that he swore never to fight or war again. He then started preaching and spreading Buddhism and peace.

Ashoka had five wives :

(i) Devi, mother of Ashoka' first son named Mahendra and another child Sanghamitra

(ii) Karuvaki, mother of Ashoka's second son Tivala

(iii) Padmavati, mother of Ashoka's third son Kunala

(iv) Asandhimitra

(v) Tishyaraksha
