Sir Dietrich Brandis KCIE FRS was a German-British botanist and forestry academic and administrator, who worked with the British Imperial Forestry Service in colonial India for nearly 30 years.

Dietrich Brandis was the first inspector general of forest department. He enacted law of forest in 1864 and formulated forest india act in 1865. He had set up Forest Research institute in Dehradun in 1905.
