In 1864 Brandis became Inspector General of Forests inIndia, a position he served in for 20 years. He formulated new forest legislation and helped establish research and training institutions. The Imperial Forest School at Dehradun was founded by him. Brandis was created a Companion of the IndianEmpire in 1878.
