Rajendra Chola 1 :-

'Rajendra Chola 1' assumed the title of 'Gangaikonda' and it means one who has conquered places up to the Ganga river.

'Rajendra Chola 1' succeeded his father Rajaraj Chola in 1014 AD and reigned till 1044 AD. He was an able son and prince. He continued the ambitious career of his father and more and more territories to the Chola empire. He is considered one of the greatest rulers and military generals of India. He extended the influence of Chola empire to the banks of river Ganga in North India and across the Indian Ocean to the west, making the Chola empire on of the most powerful empires of India. Rajendra Chola's conquests included the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Sri Lanka, Maldives, and he successfully invaded the territories of Srivijaya in Malaysia, Southern Thailand and Indonesia in South East Asia. He defeated Mahipala, the Pala king of Bengal and Bihar, and to commebmorate his victory, he built a new capital city called Gangaikonda Cholapuram. The victory over the Chaalukyas, Kalinga, Palas and other territories up to the Ganga river led him to assume the title of 'Gangaikonda'.
