He was a soldier of an Indian kingdom but later prisoned by British army and used as their soldier. When he came to know that the gun he and his colleagues used had cow fat on its, which they had to pull out with their teeth and then fire, he started opposing Britishers and began revolt of 1857 against them.

Mangal Pandey was an armyman of the 34th infantry at Barrackpore. When the rumour spread that the British government had introduce greased cartridges containing the fat of cow and pig, he called upon his fellow sepoys to Revolt against the use of new cartridges.
