Mr. Arthur Gilman was the Principal of the Cambridge School for Young Ladies. He was a generous person who learned to use manual alphabet to have a conversation with Helen. He was very serious about his students and cared deeply about Helen's education, but when he reduced her course load and extended her time at the school following her illness, Helen's mother withdrew her and put her in private tutoring.

Mr .Gilman was a noble, gentle learned and helpful person .He played an important role in Helen keller's life .He had the author in the examination paper .Also, he allowed Helen to study along with normal children .However ,he was an arrogant and stiff person also .He even underestimated her capabilities for learning
Mr gilman helped the author in her examination .As a matter of fact ,the timely help from him encouraged her very much in giving her best in coming years .During her paper in German at Cambridge ,Mr gilman was deputed to read papers to the author by means of the manual alphabet .He proved a great help to her. He sat beside the author and read the paper sentence by sentence. The author repeated the words aloud to make sure that she understood him perfectly .Again Mr gilman spelled her what she had written, and she made such changes as she thought necessary .Mr gilman assisted her in all her preliminary examinations
However, Mr gilman was an arrogant and stiff person also. He began to believe that Helen was not doing well with her studies because she was over worked .So,he insisted her to stay in school 3 years longer. And ultimately, the author's mother decided to withdraw her and her sister from Cambridge School.
