Napoleon Bonaparte was a French general, the first consul and the emperor of France (between 1804–1814/15). He was a personality who believed in some enlightenment approaches but not in social reforms. He is well recognized as a brilliant military commander and his invasion of much of Europe. After establishing himself as Emperor of France in 1804, he went out to capture the adjoining European nations, dismissing sovereignty and founding kingdoms where he installed his family members. Initially, he was observed as a savior who would bring independence to the people, but soon the Napoleonic armies appeared to be viewed universally as an invading army.

However, his hunt for leadership led to his final downfall with his failure in Waterloo in 1815.
