Dr.Pierre Aronnax is the protagonist and the narrarator in the story. He is a socially astute, intellectual man who has difinitive loyalty and love for his country, France. He was the Assistant Principal at the Museum of Natural History. At the growing concerns of a "monster" terrorizing international waters and destroying ships from different countries, Dr. Aronnax is asked to provide his professional input. Conceived as a man who puts reason before his personal feelings, he theorizes that there is a greater possiblity of the mysterious beast being a great narwhal than a monster or submarine. In an attempt to stop the being from causing any more harm, Dr. Pierre, along with Land and Conseil, board the Abraham Lincoln.Following an attack from the beast, now known as the Nautilus, the three men are brought into the submarine and into the clutches of the seemingly sinister Captain Nemo. His inability to trust his senses are exploited when it becomes increasingly apparent that Captain Nemo is erratic and possibly dangerous. He strongly disagrees with the destruction of innocent lives. The opportunity to study the undersea life is a fantastic opportunity, but Dr. Aronnax cannot see past the vengance that plauges the Nautilus. Captain Nemo holds both feelings of awe and fear in Dr. Aronnax's mind. As excape becomes imminent, Dr. Aronnax learns to set aside his problems with trusting in senses instead of rationality.
