He was the first Marxist to become president of Chile and for any South American country.
He was a physician. He joined politics for doing good to the country. He lost in many elections. He was elected as the president in 1970. He did good works like nationalization of industries and collectivisation of farming or collective farming.
He belonged to Socialist party. He was a senator and cabinet minister for many years.
Many industrialists and capitalists did not like his good deeds apparently. There was a cout d'etat supported by the CIA in september 1973 and he was killed.
He was a true hero in the eyes of poor people and workers. He liberalized policies. He made education to be tuition-fees-free. So a lot of people enrolled in educational institutes, schools to universities. He pushed up the health care. More doctors were encouraged to work in rural areas. More health centers hospitals were built. Better medical care was given. Sanitation conditions in the country were improved.
He had done good for the workers in the nation. The wages were raised. Chile was a poor country. It was being exploited. It was difficult to educate all people. Voting rights were given to 18 year old youth. People lived better during his regime. Social security system functioned better during his time. People lived better, clothed themselves better and spent better on food ,education and health.
He tried to implement socialist policies, wealth redistribution. He increased pensions.
American President and government was against his policies. There were a lot of turmoil and opposition due to foreign pressure and internal opposition and other political parties. But he insisted on his policies to do good to his people.
