The origin of Shanars as a social group is uncertain. Hardgrave stated that the Teri palmrya forests around today’s Tiruchendur must have been their original abode

The Shanars belonged to the community of toddy tappers who migrated to Southern Travancore to work under Nair landlords.
they were considered a ‘subordinate caste’,
(i) They were prohibited from using umbrellas, wearing shoes and golden ornaments.
(ii) Men and women had to follow the local custom of never covering their upper bodies before the upper castes.

Anonymous: Are the Nadars and Shanars same?
Anonymous: Yeah
Anonymous: The community was previously known as Shanar[1] but legally changed their name to Nadar in 1921
