Leo Hendrik Baekeland in 1907 was the first man made plastic used in pressure cooker. Bakelite was the synthetic plastic material. It was resistant to heat, acids and electric currents. It took the shape of any container into which the heated liquid was poured and once after cooling retained its form permanently. It is used as a handle of pressure cookers because it should be non-conductor of heat for safety.
