The reaction of an inept government to a National economic crisis at a time when there was a food shortage and concerns about mass starvation among a fearful citizenry.

The contributor above has given a basic outline of the immediate causes of this extremely important revolution. Allow me to add to the comments:
A. King Louis XVI inherited the former king's financial largess with his extravagances and wars;
B. Louis XVI thus was faced with fixing a debt ridden National Treasury;
C. Reforms were needed in France, however the new king made a bad state of affairs even worse;
D. The benevolence and real military aid he gave to the rebels of the American Revolution, ironically caused France financial hardship. Ironically is the correct word to use as the "freedom" the king served by his help to the Colonists were good press stories.
Some good propaganda and a few Ben Franklin speeches in Paris, talking about "future" democratic reforms in France, could not hurt the King's regime.
Helping the Colonies vs England had to be good press as Frenchmen were not friends of the British Empire. In fact, as the Colonies were not poor, just the announcement that farm products were on the way from America, however small they might be would have been a help;
E. Despite the bad financial situation, he maintained the lavish court at Versailles. This cost would not have had a significant impact & writing as a political scientist, it's a good idea to have foreign guests and even the public know that they were a people in a Class A nation. It would have required some good public relations but he was maintaining the court, not building new ones. The USA is still in bad economic straits but the President is not closing down wings of the White House and cutting public tours and reducing Secret Service men to watch the crowds;

hey friend,here's your answer:
Forced by the financial bankruptcy,Louis XIV was forced to call for a meeting of estate general.
the third estate demanded each person one vote but the king refused this which resulted in the formation of a national assembly.
so king Louis XIV and the members of the third estate were the immediate cause of the French revolution.
