Mughals were the descendants of the Mighty Mongols. Babur, the founder of the Mughal Dynasty was a descendant of Genghis Khan. The Mughals ruled over India with might and courage. But after the death of Aurangzeb, the sixth ruler of Mugjals, the Mughal Dynasty ceased to control over India. The main reasons for the declineof Mughals were:
Aurangzeb’s religious intolerance- Aurangzeb had reimposed the zizya tax over non - muslims. He destroyed many temples and forced many non-muslims to convert to Islam.
Lack Administrative efficiency- Aurangzeb was mostly focused on his conquests and llackedin administrative skills, this lead to the downfall of his empire. By the time of his death, the Mughal treasury was empty.
Lack of laws of succession- Every time a ruler died, the successor would be decided by the sword. Aurangzeb's successor, Bahadur Shah I was himself 65 when he was coronated as the king.

Answer:
# The successive rulers after Aurangzeb were weak, unworthy and lacked the character, motivation and commitment to rule the empire strongly.
# Aurangzeb’s policies made enemies of the Rajputs, Sikhs, Jats and the Marathas.
# His frequent wars depleted the treasury.
# The raids by Nadir Shah, and repeated invasions of Ahmad Shah Abdali, resulted in further weakening of the empire.
# The already weakened empire faced further encroachment by the British and the French. The British and French, who had initially come as traders, took full advantage of the weakening empire and soon became masters of the whole of India.
