The more colourful or stronger the animal (or bird), the female is more likely to choose him as a father as his healthy genes will pass on to her children.But being more colourful or showy also means that males are more conspicuous, meaning they are also more likely to attract a predator's attention - this is not a desirable quality in females as they look after their young, so they are usually duller in colour.Though some animals have obvious visual differences between the male and female (peacock and peahens), some animals have very subtle differences (eg a male tiger's head is slightly larger than a female's), and some seem to have no observable difference (eg crows), though they can distinguish between each other
