It seems to be am Arabic influence as Arab used to call Europeans Al Firinjahالفرنجة plural of ifranji إفرنجي it is the arabicized form of Frank the german tribes that France was named after. Ifranji became a synonym to Ajami أعجمي i.e. non Arab.
