When civil war broke down is Russia in 1918, Bolsheviks' Army was named Workers-Peasants Red Army (PKKA in Russian abbreviation). The opposite side in civil war-anti Bolshevik forces receive the name Whites (White movement). Therefore, “Reds” remained a synonym of Soviet, Bolshevik or Communist for many years.
