Before the revolution, French society was divided into three estates or orders. These were The Clergy, the Nobility and the Businessman, Court Officials, Merchants, Peasants, Artisans, Landless Labourers and Servants. The third estate was by far the largest of these, containing around 98 % population of the nation.
The middle class people earned their wealth through an expanding overseas trade and from the manufacture of goods such as woollen and silk textiles that were either exported or bought by the richer members of the society. In addition to the merchants and manufacturers , the educated in the third estate included professionals like lawyers or administrative officials. They believed that no group in the society should be privileged by birth. Rather a person's social position must depend on his merit. These ideas envisaged a society based on freedom and equal laws and opportunities for all. These ideas paved way for the emergence of the middle class.
