A Subah was the term for a province in the Mughal Empire. The word is derived from Arabic and Persian. The governor/ruler of a Subah was known as a subahdar (sometimes also referred to as a "Subeh"), which later became subedar to refer to an officer in the Indian Army.

Answer:
In the Mughal Empire and the Maratha Empire, the subahdar was the governor of a province. During the British Government it was named as the second highest rank of enlisted Indian soldiers with commanding powers over the Indian troops. Until 1858, subedars wore two epaulettes with small bullion fringes on each shoulder.
