Answers
The most prominent political clubs of the French Revolution were the Jacobin Clubs that sprung up throughout Paris and the provinces in August of 1789. By 1791, there were 900 Jacobin clubs in France associated with the main club in Paris. According to Spielvogel, "Members were usually the elite of their local societies, but they also included artisans and tradesmen" (688).
Jacobin clubs served as debating socitites where politically minded Frenchmen aired their views and discussed current political issues. Many members of Jacobin clubs were also deputies and used the meetings to group forces and plan tactics
The Jacobins were the most successful club which got its name from the former convent of St.Jacob in Paris. The members of the Jacobin club belonged mainly to the less prosperous sections of society. They included small shopkeepers, artisans, servants and daily-wage workers. Their leader was Maximilian Robespierre. They set themselves apart from the fashionable sections of society, especially nobles who wore knee breeches by wearing long striped trousers .They came to be known as the Sans-Cullotes meaning(those without knee breeches). Sans-Cullotes men wore the red cap in additional to the women which was the sign of liberty.
