They were actually radicals . Their leader was Mximillian de Robespierre. During the time between legislative and natonal convention there was a one year period from 5 sep 1793 to 28 july 1794 which was known as the time of

REIGN OF TERROR.

During this time 17000 people were killed in the name of protecting republic. After all of this Robespierre was himself sentenced to death
