Peshwa was the equivalent of a modern Prime Minister in the Maratha Empire. Originally, the Peshwas served as subordinates to the Chhatrapati, but later, they started to work with few permissions of ruler, leaders of the Marathas, and the Chhatrapati was reduced to a nominal ruler.
