The sepoys were the native Indian soldier working in forgein companies. It is basically mean "soldier" or "employed" , used for the rank and file in the Mughal army hired from local population opposed to mecenaries or tribal contingent .As European powers like East India Company conquered India, they would pay the resident soldier and their family as sepoys . Their organization started as very loose but eventually became key members of the colonial regime's army (leading to massive upheal when sepoys were provoked in 1857).
