Answer:

If 1+4=5, 2+5=12, and 3+6=21, then what is the value of 5+8?

Save taxes & secure your family's future, with a term plan.

So...the problem here is there is are MULTIPLE CORRECT ANSWERS, since the construct for this problem is not defined. Here are 5 perfectly valid ways to solve this with 5 different results. THERE ARE MORE VALID EQUATIONS that can solve this…this was just the first 5 I came up with.

(For those that are saying the addition is wrong and 8 + 5 is always 13, see my last two examples where the cross symbol is still a plus sign, and the answers still work with basic standard addition. Also, a cross symbol can also be used as a generic function symbol in some contexts. Dont be so closed minded.)

1 + 4 = 5

2 + 5 = 12

3 + 6 = 21

5 + 8 = ?

1 + 4 = 5

2 + 5 = 2 + 2(5) = 12

3 + 6 = 3 + 3(6) = 21

5 + 8 = 5 + 5(8) = 45

ALGORITHM: A + A(B) = C

ANSWER = 45

2nd example

Answer is 45.

The question above, being a problem in mental arithmetic, should be solved mentally in a few seconds.

The mathematics behind the mental processes involved is as follows:

Multiply the first two digits on the left of the equation and then add to this result the first number on the left. The result is the RHS. The number of operations involved is only 2, one is multiplication and the second addition.

Thus in the first equality 1+4 = 5, the first two digits are 1 and 4. Multiply them to get the result 4. Then add the first digit 1 to this 4. The result is 5, the RHS. In the same manner, for the second equality, we write, 2x5=10 and 10+2=12, the RHS. For the third equality, it is (3x6) + 3 = 18 + 3 = 21.

Applying the above rule to evaluate 5+8, we write 5x8=40 and then add 5 to it to arrive at the answer 45.

PS: Having answered the question in the expected way, I want to point out a flaw in the framing of or writing the question. ‘+’ is the universal symbol for addition of numbers or union of sets. Instead of + sign, we should have OP sign meaning ‘operating on’. Thus the question should have been written, 1 OP 4 instead of 1+4, 2 OP 5, 3 OP 6 and 5 OP 8. Then the readers have to discover the rule associated with the OP sign.
