Basically Negroes worked as plantation workers.
Their working conditions was not at all proper. They had to live in unhygienic places and were given low wages. Moreover, when they were taken to plantation estates in big ships where 100-500 people packed in one room, in unhygienic conditions and a fear of spread of a number of diseases.

the British Government recruited tribals like Santhal,. Oraons (Jharkhand) and Gonds (Chattisgarh) as plantation workers.

The working condition of plantation workers was miserable as the following points suggest
(i) Plantation workers were getting low wages.
(ii) They did not receive any social security benefit.
(iii) They were not allowed to go to their native place.
