The scientific writings of scientist Hermann von Helmholtz and Charles Darwin inspired Freud's scientific inquiries into the human mind. Hermann von Helmholtz wrote that energy in any given physical system is always constant, and this theory informed many of Freud's theories. Charles Darwin was his biggest scientific influence. Darwin published On the Origin of Species which for the first time theorized that a person is a scientific subject that can be researched as such.
