→ A satellite which revolves around the earth in a polar orbit perpendicular to the equatorial plane is called polar satellite.

Example:- European SPOT and the IERS (Indian Earth Resources Satellites).

The characteristics of the polar satellites:-

→ Polar satellites are low altitudes satellites.

→ The heights of the polar satellites from the surface of the earth is about 500 km to 800 km

→ Their time period is around 100 minutes.

The uses of polar satellites:-

→ For remote sensing and environmental studies of the earth.

→ In spying work of military purpose.

→ To study topography of the Moon, the Venus and the Mars.

→ To record the land and sea temperature.
