Prolactin induces lobuloalveolar growth of the mammary gland. Alveoli are the clusters of cells in the mammary gland that actually secrete milk. Prolactin stimulates lactogenesis or milk production after giving birth.

Prolactin causes mammary glands to produce milk .

Apart from being a nutritious and balanced mixture of foods , the milk contains IgA antibodies which provide the young with some initial immunity to certain diseases.
