Under Russian occupancy, Russian language was enforced on all mediums in Poland. Resistance was shown in form of armed struggle in 1831, which failed and the atrocities by the Russians grew.
Polish people used their own language in all sectors of the society as a form of protest. The Polish Church played an important role in the resistance by conducting sermons in Polish. Most of the clergy was jailed or exiled to Siberia as a result.
This added fuel to the fire and Polish nationalism grew stronger.
