Why a day is deducted when crossing the international date line from west to east and added in vice versa?

The International Date Line is the 180° line.It is same for east or west of the Prime Meridian. Since it is diametrically opposite to that of Greenwich Meridian it causes a time difference of a full day on crossing this line.
