After a heavy meal our insulin level spike. This is because for every heavy meal we eat out pancreas produce insulin for regulating blood sugar levels. The heavier the meal the more insulin will be produced. With the increased secretion of insulin our body produces sleep hormone which metabolizes into serotonin and melatonin in our brain which produced drowsiness. This nerve response tells our body that we should rest now.
