Answer:

Because most of the generating stations are placed far away from cities due to various reasons like convenience, safety, cost, availability of raw material etc. so from there power has to be transmitted to cities. When you are transferring power through conductors for hundreds or thousands of kilometers the system efficiency will be reduced due to copper loss, stray loss etc.  To overcome that we have to increase the voltage level for transmission and at the receiving end  we have to reduce the voltage level so as to utilise our house hold electrical apparatuses. Now the choice for AC or DC will depend on the cost of equipment needed to increase and decrease voltage level. As the transformer and related equipment for AC are  cheaper compared to boosters and converters for DC, AC supply system is less expensive and accepted world wide.
