QUESTION:-

why acetylene forms silver acetylide but ethylene does not

ANSWER:-

  • Acetylene customarily reacts with the silver nitrate for forming silver acetylide (C2Ag2) which is a hazardous and powerful explosive substance which occurs at a temperature of about 210 C. or electrostatic energy is sufficient to explode the dry substance.

  • Acetylene forms silver acetylene because acetylene consists of a triple bond, so the reaction with ammoniacal AgNO3 will give silver acetylide as silver acetylide also contains a triple bond in its structure whereas, ethylene does not contain a triple bond in its structure so it cannot form silver acetylide.

Hence, acetylene forms silver acetylide but ethylene does not.
