Why actual atomic mass is greater than mass number?

The atomic mass is not equal to theatomic mass number because of isotopes. ... An atom is defined by thenumber of protons it has. While the majority of atoms have the samenumber of neutrons and protons, isotopes have a different number of neutrons than protons
